A Family Business

Cara Wheeler

Cara grew up in Central NY riding her two Appendix Quarter horses on the AQHA circuit in hunter over fences and equitation over fences along with catch riding anything from Warmbloods, Welsh Ponies, Arabians, and OTTBs on the local, C rated circuit, and breed specific regional shows. Cara then went on to college at Cazenovia College and got her BPS in Management with a specialization in Equine Business Management where she also competed on their IHSA team in Intermediate Fences and Open flat from 2012-2016. In between her junior and senior year there was a required summer internship and her internship coordinator helped her choose Kent School in Kent, CT. During that summer she helped do all the things necessary as a working student to take care of the horses including riding 4-6 horses a day under the tutelage of their head trainer, Michael Page. After graduating, Cara then accepted a Trainer/ Assistant Barn Manager position at Kent School with Michael Page and Lyman T. Whitehead from 2016-2023. She’s shown along the Northeast/ New England area at Old Salem Farm, Saratoga, HITs Saugerities, and HITs Vermont in the 1.10-1.25 jumpers with her own Dutch Warmblood Remmy along with hunter classes with client horses. She’s also participated in clinics with Bernie Traurig, Marcia Kulak, and Jerry Schurink.

It’s very rare to not see Cara in breeches and boots but when she’s not she’s out exploring and hiking with her two pups, Huck and Emma!

Owner

Since Shawn was a junior in high school, he has been involved in the Family Transportation Business.  Working after school in the garage, he started to learn the business from the ground up.   At this same time his family had a small horse farm that he helped maintain, learning to ride and then eventually doing some team penning. After High school he joined the Air Force and went into what he knew--transportation!

Since then, Shawn has worked throughout the company eventually becoming part owner with his two brothers and running our facility in Trenton, as well as safety and compliance for the company.

Recently the three brothers, as well as their father, went on cattle drive out in Wyoming.  This unbelievable experience rekindled Shawn's love for horses.  Ironically, within a few months we drove past Duncraven, and it was for sale.  Looking into it, the family believed purchasing the property was a great way to invest in and reinvigorate something that was once great, as well as pursue a business in something they all enjoy. Although Shawn's equestrian experience is originally with western saddles and cows, it has been fun for him to learn about and experience the Hunter Jumper world!
